Happiness remains in Gascon country

Day 2 : FOURCES - SOLOMIAC (93 on 298 km)

First day Second day Third day Road book

The imposing castle of Fourcès is a building with an apparent austere look in a quite soft background. This serenity will be revealed in the refinement of the inner setting where the mullion windows exude a peaceful light into the vast bedrooms.

Amid the meadows and the wooden hills you will travel along the valley of Auzoue towered by the picturesque walled town of Montréal which harbours a superb fortified Gothic church.

Travel the time back by driving around the Gallo-Roman cottage of Séviac. Then you will approach the Pyrénées foothills. The hills which harbour the Armagnac vineyard provide a range of shimmering colours at the time of grape harvests. Have a stop at the Roman church of Mouchan before travelling towards the Cassaigne castle where you will taste armagnac aged in oak casks, as well as a white “ floc” from Gascogne.

You will cross Larressingle where the moats and the fortifications which protected a XIIth century keep still remain. Then you will arrive in Condom where the arranged-canal Baïse was used to export Armagnac for a long time. While ambling all along the former quays you will distinguish Saint-Pierre cathedral, one of the last Gascon building with a Gothic style.

Further you will approach the Gers valley overlooked by Lectoure. From the bastion terrace you will enjoy a splendid view over the whole valley and the Pyrénées range. After crossing Monfort which lies on a ridge line overlooking the valley of Gimone, your journey will come to an end at Solomiac.
